Meeting Minutes of March 4, 2001

At 13:35 hours Geoffrey Conklin, Vice President JGTSCA, announced that our president and treasurer were attending a TSCA meeting at the Mystic Seaport and called the meeting to order in the Avery Point clubhouse. There were (5) people in attendance.

President’s Report: Steve Jones and Carol Crosby have expressed their distress at the disappearance of the John Gardner gig while on loan to the Sound School. Mr. Tim Vissel, business manager of the Sound School will be writing a letter to the chapter. More information will follow as we learn more details. By invitation from Aimee’ Fraser, Russell and Tim Weaver plan to travel to Norwalk to look at a gig with hope of bringing it back with them.

Thanks to George Spragg for his generosity in delivering a refrigerator to the clubhouse.

Recognition goes to the Friday night crews making good progress on the Martin skiff and canoe. Extra effort is being made. Larry Magee made cradles for the canoe and came in on Wednesday evening to put them in place. Phil and Winslow Behney have worked Wednesday evenings to scarf boards together so material would be ready for planking the skiff on Friday evenings.

Tim and Liz Weaver with beagle accompanied Russ and John Weiss, TSCA Webmaster from Washington State to Hull, MA for the 2001 Snow Row. Tim and Russ rowed the Susan Holland, setting no course records but thoroughly enjoying the experience. Boats of various sizes and configurations were there. Photos will soon be available on our website and in the shop.

Members are encouraged to attend the upcoming Revolution War attack reenactment in Essex on Apr. 7th and 8th sponsored by the Connecticut River Oar and Paddle Club and the JGTSCA Pine Island Cleanup, Earth Day celebration on April 22nd.

Secretary’s Report: Minutes from the 2/7/01 meeting were approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Current checking account balance: $666.34 (rounded off to $666.66 by Geoff.)

Membership: No report.

Old Business:

  1. Floating the Apple event: Geoff reported attending the event with Winslow Behney and Russell. The weather was cold, his rowing crew was somewhat over enthusiastic in the rough seas making Geoff feel lucky that he survived the experience. He said Russ and Winslow experienced the same "boundless enthusiasm." They had the opportunity to study boat construction. Floating the Apple is in the process of building their 22nd boat. Geoff said that they use somewhat different and simpler methods than we do in response Chauncy Rucker’s question about their speed of construction. They involve young folks in their programs and have students making plywood "C" clamps for use in the boat building.
  2. New mailing address: Chauncy Rucker reported his success in securing a mailing address and phone number for the JGTSCA at the college and presented cards: Russell Smith, President
